design, installation, and workshop - snölykta, 2024
A public art installation made on Nytorps Gärde in stockholm. The intent of the project was to collaboratively design and build something out of snow. during a substantial part of the year snow is an abundant and free resource. snow lanterns are a typical sight during the winter and we decided to use the types familarity to help make something new. the shape and access to a large quantity of material evolved into three sided pyramid with a pleasant glow, big enough for a child.
design, installation, and workshop - public chairs, 2022
A public art installation used to investigate and activate part of valhallavägen. The chairs were designed to be as simple as possible. asking what a chair is at it's point maximum distillation: a series of surfaces organized in space to support the human body. the chairs were built during a collaborative workshop in early 2022 and stayed on site, moving around, finding new orientations, crossing the road, hosting impromptu parties, looking for spring sun-shine, and being public furniture for 6 months until finally being cleaned away late august 2022 by unknown persons. La Tribuna, 2022
As part of a larger social housing project in Lugano, Switzerland, a streetlamp doubling as a piece of public furniture was introduced. Inspired by the 1950s football tribune found on site, the lamp would be built out of reinforced concrete: making it sturdy enough to function as a vehicle obstacle. La Tribuna would be placed along pathways both in the park and along the riverwalk towards the lake: further strengthening the gesture of overcoming the divide between central and peripheral Lugano. A 1:1 prototype of La Tribuna was constructed out of concrete, plaster, and Styrofoam. Making it sturdy enough to be sittable and as it was equipped with the necessary electronics the light could be tried out first hand.
Designed together with Luca Rodella.
gäststugan, runmarö, sweden, 2023
A small vacation home on the island of Runmarö, in the Stockholm Archipelago. Two bedrooms, a bathroom and a large family room in the center. Inspired by the old shed that was located on the site before. A simple frame system with a tarred facade and oiled wooden windows. Construction started autumn 2023.
public lights, 2023
a public art installation. the site is a long corridor of garden space, half a kilometer long. a significant and overlooked artefact of functionalist city planning. the site on gärdet is dark by design. the park is 20 meters wide, contained on both sides by two rows of housing (between 4-7 floors in height) creates a fuzzy sense of territory, and the fear of being observed makes using the space difficult. recent arboreal diseases have prompted the removal of several trees leaving one specific area particularly bare. this space needs love. 30 garden lights were used. the light itself signals domesticity, private villa gardens, and ownership. the intention is that when these lights are installed in a public setting the symbolism will flip and grant ownership to the public as a whole.
If a Tree Falls in the Forest, 2023
Master’s thesis Nils Chigot Eriksson and Hampus Thysell
The project proposes three architectural interventions: The Mushroom, The Gnat and The Snake, fitting into a vision of the Swedish forest managed in a more sustainable way. A future in which the practice of clear-felling has been abandoned in favor of alternative methods falling under the umbrella term Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF). As the biological aspects of forestry is not our area of expertise, we have investigated what this reorganization at large would mean for the Swedish landscape, economy and society: where it becomes a question for architecture.
When the timber industry loses its hegemony over the forest, the forest becomes available to different uses. For life and recreation, and for the production of forest goods aside from timber such as wild game meat, berries, and mushrooms. These activities are able to take place within the same space as forestry, thereby overcoming today’s spatial separation of functions.
Our interventions work by docking onto different points of today’s logistics flow, over time replacing them. The project follows the flow of goods from the forest as they make their way towards the larger markets, taking into account the different values and varied user of the forest which were identified.
The Mushroom is an outpost in the middle of the productive forest which supplies the surrounding area with the necessary infrastructure in order to extract goods from it, doubling as a recreational dwelling. One of these can be placed every 30 km.
The Gnat is a tower structure with multiple functions ranging from marking the pick-up spot for the harvested timber to functioning as a hunting tower, shelter and storage. Many of them are placed along forest roads.
The Snake is a processing plant managing small-scale refinement of forest goods close to their site of harvest, thus channeling some of the economical flow back to the local communities living of the forest.
Together they form a complete series of infrastructure, demonstrating how we could organize the Swedish forest of tomorrow.
